Introduction
Children with disordered or very delayed language require a systematic, structural approach using developmental levels of language acquisition.
Syntax Sense is aimed at teachers, therapists and parents whose aim is to get children with disordered or minimal speech to use syntax in a way that makes sense. All through Syntax Sense these adults are referred to as 'the adult'.
Throughout the series of Syntax Sense, the levels refer to Ann Locke's Living Language, not the National Curriculum.
Initial assessment stage
If you do not have access to SLT advice, it is still possible on an informal basis to assess the level of words that a child is using and understanding.
Syntax Sense explains how to do this.
If a child is failing at level one, but uses two words together (see Living Language's basic 110 word list) e.g. 'Daddy gone', 'more milk', etc., you will need to work through this book.
